Launched 60 years ago the Slinky Spring still captivates people around the world with it's sleek motion.

It was invented in the U.S.A. in 1943 by Richard James, a naval engineer, while he conducted an experiment with tension springs.

One of the springs fell to the floor and he noticed the spring "walking". This gave him the idea to create a coil spring.

After two years of research with different steels, Richard and his wife Betty found the optimal design made from 80 feet of coiled wire. Betty named the coil a "Slinky" meaning sleek or stealthy in Swedish.

The Slinky Spring was an instant success and today over 60 years later more than a quarter of a billion have been sold.
