It is said that Admiral Sir Francis Drake, on hearing of the approach of the Spanish Armada, refused to set sail with the British Fleet until he had finished his game of Bowls on Plymouth Hoe.

The truth was that the tide was wrong so they couldn’t leave – but it makes a great story! (Later, when conditions were right, he defeated the Armada by sailing burning ships into their fleet.)
