The thermometer was invented during the 17th Century by Galileo, the famous Italian scientist and astronomer, and consists of attractive weights suspended in a clear, liquid-filled cylinder.

Galileo discovered that the specific gravity of liquids change as they expand at different temperatures. As the temperature rises the liquid expands – its specific gravity decreases and the weights sink.
